On Wednesday 12th November, over 50 UC4 students travelled to Warwick University for the GCSE Maths in Action event.
We listened to six lectures which applied GCSE Mathematics to the real world, covering topics such as how to expect the unexpected, the uses of colour in Maths, Magic and Maths and the Maths of juggling tricks.
Christabell (UC4) shared her highlights from the day:
"The host for the day was Sophie Maclean, whom I already knew from Numberphile, one of my favourite YouTube channels of all time, so I was very excited. She spoke about colour in Maths and explored parts of Number Theory with us. I was thrilled to meet her after her talk and it was one of my highlights of the day.
“Zoe Griffiths entertained us with some maths-related magic tricks. She asked a question about the card trick she had just shown us and I put up my hand to answer. At this point, all of the other CLC girls were pointing at me to get her attention. Fortunately, she picked me and it was very exciting to answer the question.
“We had an exam session with Nicole Cozens, where she showed us the most common mistakes in Maths GCSE and how to avoid them, which was very useful exam preparation.
“Finally, Colin Wright showed us how juggling and maths interlink. We were very entertained and impressed by his juggling skills, especially after he had told us that he was not a very good juggler (which was most definitely not true - he juggled five balls at once)! I had a great day at Warwick University, and I would love to attend another Maths in Action event and meet Sophie Maclean again."
The girls had a great day and came away with a broader understanding of Mathematics in the real world. The exam technique session gave them helpful tips from the GCSE Maths examiner reports.
My real highlight of the day was hearing Colin Wright speak about how he invented a technique using Maths to describe juggling tricks, and how he used it to predict and invent a new juggling trick, which was shared around the world.
We had a brilliant day and are already looking forward to taking the current LC3 next year!
