On Monday 29th September, we were delighted to welcome Paddy and Brenda from Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees (CWR) to speak to our LC2 students.
In English, our pupils have been studying Fabio Geda’s novel ‘In the Sea There are Crocodiles’, based on the life of Afghan refugee Enaiatollah Akbari, who sought refuge in Italy.
As a volunteer for CWR, Paddy shared interesting facts about refugees and how the local charity supports them in acclimatising to their new lives. He also addressed some common myths and misconceptions about people seeking asylum.
Brenda spoke about her experience and journey as a refugee from El Salvador, the many obstacles she has faced and overcome, as well as the moments of happiness she’s experienced since living in Cheltenham.
Students and teachers would like to offer their wholehearted appreciation to CWR for helping us better understand the difficulties that those seeking asylum experience, and the benefits of having diversity in our local community.
Ms Meyrick, Head of English
