The History & Politics Department and Religious Studies Department organised a tutorial on Monday 23rd May with lecturers from the University of Warwick on the topic ‘Democracy and Deepfakes’. Students of Politics and applicants to PPE and Liberal Arts engaged in an online discussion about the moral and political implications of the increasing ability to make convincing fake video and audio.
With reference to Plato and Kahneman, Dr Barney Walker responded to questions about whether we live in a post-truth society and the implications this might have for democracies and dictatorships. He emphasised the role of a good education in ensuring students attend to the most important issues of the day, avoiding the informational isolation which can have such damaging consequences. It was not without controversy and has prompted lively debate.
