Keen human rights campaigner, Ruby (UC5 / Year 11), has been furthering her work in this area since finishing her GCSEs in June. For the past five years, Ruby has been working alongside human rights organisations such as the UN and Amnesty International, and she is now campaigning for human rights education to be a compulsory component in the school curriculum in the UK.
Recently, Ruby travelled to the United Nations in Geneva to meet with child human rights experts at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. She also met with local MP Alex Chalk to discuss her campaign.
On Thursday 30th June, Ruby attended a meeting at the House of Lords with Doreen Lawrence, The Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon OBE, who was very supportive of her plans and ideas. Ruby will now be working with the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation.
Ruby says: "Since the age of about 11, I've been passionate about human rights. I remember discovering that only a proportion of people had shared the same privileges I had, such as freedom of speech and the right to life, which shocked me. Human rights are some of the most fundamental and essential components in creating a society that embodies fairness, dignity, equality and respect. I am currently petitioning for a compulsory component to be added to the PSHE curriculum in the UK surrounding human rights, as I believe every person should understand their rights from a young age. Often in the news, we see disturbing cases of people's rights being abused, in some circumstances without their knowledge. This can have a detrimental impact, not only on those affected directly, but on a larger scale."
Ruby's petition can be found here.
