Celebrating Chemistry Highlights and Successes

This Summer Term saw a flurry of Chemistry competitions that challenged students to showcase their knowledge of Chemistry and problem-solving skills.

RSC Analytic Challenge

Ten teams under the guidance of Dr Evans completed the RSC Analytic Challenge: problem-solving, teamwork and an eye for accurate laboratory work were all to the fore. From the ten teams that competed, Team 3 (Fiona, Bella and Julia) emerged as the CLC winners.

National Scientific Thinking Challenge

All UC4 students took part in the National Scientific Thinking Challenge, an online test organised by top UK universities, designed to encourage deep thinking skills in STEM-related contexts. Many students received gold certificates (top 10% of the national cohort) with Elise, Candic and Theodora joint top scoring for CLC.

Cambridge Chemistry Challenge C3L6

Twenty students took part in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge C3L6, where a paper tested their understanding of topics from carbonyl chemistry to the reactions of superoxides. Sissi Gao topped the rankings for CLC, with Zoe and Sarah rounding off the podium positions.

CLC Chemistry Olympiad Paper

Finally, around 35 students from UC3 and UC4 sat the CLC Chemistry Olympiad Paper. This is a challenge we introduced four years ago to give younger students, early in their chemistry journey, an opportunity to experience an Olympiad-style assessment.

Students showed real flair, answering questions about chlorine in swimming pools, organic molecules and the acids in ant bites.

Congratulations to Elianna (UC3) and Olivia (UC4), who came top of their respective years and were awarded platinum certificates!
