CLC welcomes global author, feminist, and activist Laura Bates
Laura Bates: The Everyday Sexism Project
Last week, CLC welcomed best-selling author, feminist, and activist, Laura Bates to give a talk outlining her experiences, research and advice to students.
Founder of the Everyday Sexism Project and writer of many fiction and non-fiction books including Girl Up, Misogynation, and Fix the System, Not the Women, Laura Bates was the perfect speaker for our context at CLC.
Bates put into words a lot of the struggles women face in daily life, and highlighted the value of female solidarity.

Laura Bates has worked with the United Nations and the Council of Europe on sexism and inequality, campaigned for putting consent on the national curriculum, and changed online content policies to keep female users safer.
Her work also encouraged students to consider their own role in creating change, with Phoebe (SFC1) saying that Bates inspired her to connect with other powerful women in society.
She has been formally recognised for her work by being awarded a British Empire Medal as well as being named 'Woman of the Year' by several publications including The Sunday Times Magazine.
Bates’s message was particularly memorable: when expressing your voice, be an upstander, not a bystander.

As a longtime fan, Ms Meyrick, Head of English, was particularly delighted to host Laura. Her talk and the follow-up Q&A session modelled authentic and compelling oracy.
Students and staff were also able to purchase some of Laura’s books and get them signed afterwards.
We hope to invite Laura back to CLC in the near future: the conversation about the impacts of AI on gender equality is too important a topic for us to not explore further.
