CLC Welcomes Professor Lewis Dartnell
CLC Welcomes Professor Lewis Dartnell
On Tuesday 13th October, Professor Lewis Dartnell, a research scientist at the University of Westminster, visited College.
In his talk and workshop, he explored a wide range of ideas, from rebuilding the world after an apocalyptic event to the science behind optical illusions, detecting microbial life on the Martian surface, and discovering exoplanets.
UC5 students Sophie and Elise shared their reflections from the day.
Professor Dartnell’s talk and workshop were really inspiring. In his workshop, we devised an experiment to find life on Mars. This was extremely riveting as we were able to apply the knowledge we learnt in class to a real-life scenario, albeit the experiment that we ultimately drafted was one that NASA had come up with in the 1970s.
It helped to develop our teamwork and gave us insight into the type of work that astrobiologists do.

Professor Dartnell’s talk focused on his award-winning book The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Our World from Scratch, which explores how to rebuild society after an apocalypse.
What really captured our attention was the various physical crafts that he brought along with him, such as a Kindle that he programmed to never run out of battery.
The effort he put into the hands-on research for this book was reflected in his enthusiasm, thus making the talk even more engaging.
We can confidently say that everyone will have left the talk having learnt something new.
The day sparked many questions and discussions, and we look forward to welcoming Lewis back to College.
