'In Bloom' Art Exhibition

'In Bloom' Art Exhibition

In Bloom is an intergenerational collaborative project that brings together two communities: St Hilda’s East and Cheltenham Ladies’ College. The exhibition featured postcard-sized artworks created by LC3 and UC4 pupils alongside members of St Hilda’s East Older People’s Group, Feeling Good.

Flowers form the shared visual language of this project. As a motif, they connect age groups, experiences, and places, offering a familiar yet deeply personal subject through which each artist responds. Grouped by process, the works sit alongside one another in quiet conversation.

St Hilda’s East has been part of the local community in East London since 1889, founded by the Guild of Cheltenham Ladies’ College they welcome everyone into our spaces, work together to deliver engaging activities, promote social contact, and ultimately enrich lives.

The postcard - traditionally a form of communication across distance, here becomes both image and message - a bridge between individuals, generations, and places. Some works incorporate written words, offering personal thoughts, moments, and reflections on particular flowers. These responses invite the viewer to pause, read, and consider the meanings.

Across the exhibition, the work ebbs and flows between the two groups, revealing a rich variety of creative processes including cyanotype, paper collage, digital photography, and watercolour. Each approach explores a different interpretation, yet all are united by the shared theme.

As you move through the exhibition, you are invited to take time with each piece: to notice differences and similarities, to read the words, and to reflect on your own relationships with flowers, place, and communication.
