Industrial Cadets Gold Success at the University of Birmingham
A team of six outstanding SFC students — Cloris, Jenny, Michelle, Kelly, Jessica, and Ferial — recently showcased their innovation and teamwork at the Industrial Cadets Gold Celebration Day event held at the University of Birmingham.
Their project, focusing on a mini hydroelectric power generation unit designed for water treatment monitoring, impressed both judges and peers alike. The system demonstrated a creative and sustainable approach to harnessing renewable energy within an environmental engineering context, highlighting the students’ technical skills and forward-thinking design.
The event brought together schools from across the Midlands, offering a fantastic opportunity to explore a wide range of impressive projects. It was a truly inspiring day, filled with collaboration, learning, and celebration of young engineering talent.
It was an amazing experience working with friends from Elizabeth and other houses. We built a mini hydroelectric turbine for powering a kiosk that monitors water quality using renewable energy.
Jenny, SFC Student
SFC student Jenny continued: "We learnt a lot about how we could implement designs in engineering through this project, and had some wonderful hands-on experience working with Severn Trent.
"We had a fabulous day (although we were fermenting under the 35 degrees heat), and would encourage anyone else to take part."
We are thrilled to report that the team achieved an incredible milestone — winning Best Project for 2026. This recognition is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and ingenuity.
A superb achievement and a proud moment for our aspiring SFC students. A huge thank you to Richard and Severn Trent for their amazing support this year.
