Sport Roundup 19th June
Tennis
On Thursday 21st May, Farmors School came to CLC to play two of our Year 9/10 teams in the National Schools during their field session. Our C team displayed confidence and played their B team, taking a convincing 5-1 win.
Our B team played against their A team and had a closely contested match. It was equal at 3 matches won each, so it came down to a Championship tiebreak to 10 points. Sofea and Shanxi played some strong tennis and took home the win overall, winning 10-6! Well done, both!
The first week back after half term, we had more National School fixtures, against Pates on Wednesday and Balcarras on Thursday. While both our Year 7/8 teams played in extremely windy and showery conditions, they defeated Pates and secured the win. Against Balcarras on Thursday, our Year 9/10 team had some great close games, and the Year 7/8 proved too strong.
Well done, all!
On Saturday 6th June we managed to play our annual school girls doubles tournament. This is one pair for U14, U16 and U18, and our team involved Allegra, Ferial, Evelyn, Kenny, Maddie and Leanne. The schools playing were St Mary's Calne, Dean Close, Pates and Cheltenham College. It was an exceptionally high standard, involving county players.
Well done to all our pairs, but a special mention to our U18 and U14 teams for coming runner-up and having very close matches against the winning teams.
Athletics
Despite a torrential downpour at the start of the Championships, our athletes rose superbly to the challenge. With a small squad of just 10 athletes, CLC finished an impressive 2nd overall in the team standings despite not contesting the full programme. There were standout performances across both track and field, including Mimi winning the 200m Championship title, Joanna finishing 2nd in the 1500m, and numerous season’s best and personal best performances. The team also rounded off the day with a strong 2nd place finish in the relay. A fantastic afternoon of athletics and a wonderful reflection of the commitment and determination of everyone involved.
Well done all!
CLC athletes were also proudly represented in the Cheltenham & District team at the County Athletics Championships, competing against the best performers from across Gloucestershire. There were some excellent performances, including an age-group title for Athene in the triple jump, podium finishes for Charlotte in the 100m and Louisa in the triple jump, and personal best performances from Grace in the discus. Bea, Joanna, and Eliza also represented the District superbly, demonstrating determination, resilience, and skill in their respective events.
Well done to all our athletes for representing both College and the District with such distinction!
Equestrian
The Equestrian team had a wonderful day at Rectory Farm Arena. Eva was placed 3rd in a competitive 70cm class, and Meredith 2nd in the 100cm. Ladin produced a strong performance with a lovely clear round.
Both Eva and Meredith have now qualified for the National Schools Championships! Well done, all!
Dance
Exams have begun! First in were Bella and Vanessa, who have taken their ISTD Intermediate Contemporary exam, the first girls at CLC to ever take this level of Contemporary exam.
Fantastic achievement, well done!
Rowing
The past few weeks have been packed with exciting rowing events, showcasing the fantastic success of our rowers.
Evesham Regatta
Firstly, we had the Evesham regatta. Huge congratulations to Emerald and Connie, who won their semi-final to progress to the final, narrowly missing out on victory in a thrilling race. Special recognition goes to Ann-Sophie and Florrie, who both won their respective age-group single sculling events – an outstanding achievement against strong club competition.
Worcester Regatta
Worcester was our most-attended regatta of the season so far and a fantastic day for all involved. A particular well done to our UC4 rowers, many of whom competed in their first-ever regatta and gained invaluable racing experience.
Congratulations to Dagmar, who impressed in her first single sculling race despite her extensive crew boat experience. Ann-Sophie delivered an exceptional performance, winning both her heats and semi-final before finishing second in a highly competitive final. Florrie continued her excellent form by taking another victory in her single scull, an incredible achievement in her final year.
Row with a Pro
Our annual Row with a Pro event was another great success. Students took on the role of coaches, introducing parents, family members, and teachers to the sport they love. The day was filled with positivity, laughter, and plenty of memorable moments on the water.
The event perfectly reflected the supportive culture of rowing at CLC, encouraging everyone to try something new, embrace challenges, and enjoy the experience. A special mention goes to Dr Coker, who dusted off her rowing skills and thoroughly enjoyed her afternoon back on the water.
Sweep Rowing
Our UC4 rowers have recently taken on an exciting new challenge: learning the art of sweep rowing. Unlike sculling, where athletes use two oars, sweep rowing requires rowers to handle a single oar and work in complete harmony with their crew.
The girls have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, quickly adapting to the different technique. It has been brilliant to see their confidence grow as they learn to move a boat efficiently together, laying strong foundations for future crew racing opportunities.
Learn to Row Programme
Finally, it has been wonderful to see so many LC3 students taking part in the Learn to Row programme. Their enthusiasm, bravery, and determination have been exceptional, with many already progressing off floats. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to welcoming many of them into the rowing programme next year as they continue to develop their skills and become part of our thriving rowing community.
One of the most memorable moments of the term came during Ann-Sophie’s final rowing session the day before her maths GCSE. As both Ann-Sophie and her sister Aurelie prepare to leave College at the end of the academic year, we arranged a special opportunity for them to share a boat for the first and last time in CLC colours. They enjoyed a memorable row together and created a moment that will undoubtedly stay with them for years to come.
