Sport RoundUp 22nd May
Tennis
On Thursday we had 2 UC4 teams playing singles and doubles against Dean Close in the National Schools competition. One team had a nail-biting championship tiebreak decider when it was 3 wins each. They played superbly and came through winning 10-6 in this closely contested final! Our Saturday started off with the LC2 challenge cup. Well done to Puma’s for coming 1st place after a fantastic morning of lots of matches. In the afternoon we had a block fixture against Downe House, the U12 and U13 played away and split the afternoon playing cricket and tennis. At home we had the U14’s and seniors and we were grateful for our committed U15 players who stepped in for some valuable match experience. They showed resilience and we had some great points and games played.
Badminton
Over exeat, Gianna, Elise and Evelyn took part in a Badminton tournament. They all attend external training as well as being highly committed to improving their Badminton at CLC, and their hard work is paying off.
Well done to all three of them for a great weekend of competitive matches. A special well done to Gianna who partnered a Dean Close student and together they went on to gain a bronze medal.
Athletics
The District Schools Championships threw every type of weather at our athletes throughout the afternoon, but their resilience and determination shone through brilliantly. Well done to all 17 athletes who competed, with particular congratulations to SFC1 Charlotte, LC3 Ugonna, and SFC1 Eliza for winning their events.
A special mention also goes to LC2 Bea for reaching two finals, alongside LC3 Mimi and UC4 Louisa, who also secured places in their respective finals. We now await news from the selectors to see whether any CLC athletes will be chosen to represent the District at the County Championships.
On Saturday, College athletes competed in a head-to-head fixture against Kings Worcester. Despite difficult and ever-changing weather conditions, our U13 and U15 teams performed superbly, showing excellent determination, team spirit, and a willingness to step outside their usual events to support the team. Across the afternoon, athletes produced an impressive 13 new season’s best performances, highlighting the excellent progress already being made this season.
It was particularly pleasing to see students embracing both the competitive challenge and the supportive team environment throughout the meet. Well done to all athletes involved on a fantastic afternoon of athletics.
Dance
Seventeen CLC girls took park in the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts, alongside 100’s of students from the county. They performed with confidence and poise, displaying a high level of technical ability.
Congratulations to all those involved and thank you to the teachers who created the choreography for these girls. A special mention goes to three of the girls who choreographed their own pieces: Yuliia, Marta and Xuan Xuan (SFC1). A trio of LC3 girls gained a Silver Medal in the 'Classical Dance Trio 14 years and under' class.
Xuan Xuan (SFC1) was awarded the highest mark in any Ballet solo across all classes, receiving a Gold medal and the Senior Ballet Trophy. She then went on to achieve Silver Medals in for her Lyrical and Modern dance solos.
Swimming
Last Tuesday, we hosted a triangular fixture against Westonbirt and Cheltenham College. With four age groups competing, it provided a wonderful opportunity to bring our swimming community together.
The strong team spirit clearly lifted performances in what proved to be a closely contested match. Well done particularly to LC1 Vincci, Marcella, and Poppy; LC2 Allyson and Kayla; LC3 Karen; and UC4 Claire, on all achieving new personal bests.
Guild 2026 Sport
It was a wonderful afternoon of matches with Guild members in Golf, Hockey, Lacrosse & Netball. Excellent skills were on show along with some fantastic examples of vintage PE kit and tour kit!
It was a wonderful sight to see CLC players of all ages enjoying sports matches played in good spirit.
Cricket
This week saw another positive set of cricket fixtures and training opportunities for CLC. The U14Bs benefited from an extended internal training session focused on batting, bowling and tactical development, showing excellent improvement throughout.
In U12 fixtures against Downe House, pupils demonstrated great teamwork and resilience, with Ines L and Nora B named Coaches’ Players of the Match, while Naomi took three wickets in a row to earn Bowler of the Match and Rose was named Batter of the Match.
In a thrilling fixture against Haberdashers’ Monmouth, CLC U14s showed significant progress in bowling and fielding before securing a dramatic tie on the final ball. Rose S was named best bowler and Maita T best batter.
Overall, it was another encouraging week of development and teamwork across all teams.
Rowing
The rowers had a fantastic day at Worcester regatta. There were some excellent wins in the heats and semi-finals, with lots of crews progressing through to the finals and an overall win for Florrie in the J18 singles category.
Very special shoutouts go to Dagmar - for her first race in a single, and Ann-Sophie - for winning her heat and semi-final, narrowly missing out on a win in the final against a very strong opponent.
Congratulations also go to our UC4 students. For some, this was their first experience of a regatta and they gained invaluable racing experience.
