Spring Concert 2026
Spring Concert 2026
The Spring Concert is a major event in the College’s musical calendar, bringing together students from across our top orchestras in a wide‑ranging programme devised by our Director of Music, Mr Lloyd.
The concert opened with Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, performed by the String Serenaders under Mr Bailey, setting a reflective tone with its rich string textures and spatial effects. The Symphony Orchestra then took centre stage. Costanza (SFC2) was the first soloist of the evening, performing the opening movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, combining sheer technique with a strong sense of the musical line in this demanding Romantic work. Janice (SFC2) followed with the lively final movement of Glière’s Harp Concerto, where her confident handling of rapid figurations brought clarity and energy to this rarely performed work. Olivia (SFC2) delivered an exquisitely characterised performance of Popper’s Hungarian Rhapsody, capturing its shifting moods and folk‑inspired rhythms.
After the interval, the concert concluded with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”, conducted by Mr Hawley. This is a substantial work featuring major solos from our woodwind section leaders, as well as enthralling tutti moments.
Warm thanks go to Mr Hawley, Mr Bailey and Miss Crowell for their direction and preparation of the orchestras, and to all staff who supported rehearsals and the concert itself.
Mr Carr,
Piano Teacher
