World Gold Award at World Economics Cup 2026

World Gold Award at World Economics Cup 2026

Following their success in the Continental Qualifying Round (UK National Finals) of the World Economics Cup in April, a team of five SFC2 Economics students represented the UK in the Continental Round (European Finals) of the competition over the course of seven days in July.

The competition was split into three sections: Fundamentals, Deep Comprehension and Thinking & Innovation. The ‘Fundamentals’ section consisted of a written exam on the foundations of Economics. In the ‘Deep Comprehension’ section, students had to attend lectures and complete a materials-based assessment on a given context.

Finally, in the 'Thinking and Innovation’ section, students had to give a problem-solving presentation in which they analysed cases and proposed original, well-structured solutions.

The team were awarded Fourth Place in Europe. They also received a number of Individual Gold and Silver Awards, and progressed to the Global Finals in August.

The Global Final again took place over a week, with the team having to prepare and deliver a collaborative team essay in answer to the question ‘Can government cash payments raise the birth rate?’.

I am delighted to announce that students received a World Gold Award, ranking as one of the top 10 teams in the world, a fantastic achievement!

A huge congratulations goes to Amy, Zara, Gigi, Sarah and Gwyneth on this outstanding achievement - one which they should feel immensely proud of!
