Junior Boarding

Our six Junior Houses are home to our Lower and Upper College boarders (11-16 years old).

Each House is different, yet the same. Each has the same facilities – a dining room, common rooms, prep rooms for completing homework, and dorms. However, each has its own unique sense of identity – formed over decades and influenced by the layout of the House, the staff that work there, and inevitably the girls that live there too. By the nature of boarding, as each year progresses new girls join and older girls progress onto Sixth Form houses, everyone who has called it home leaves their mark on the House and helps to shape the ever-evolving intangible sense of House spirit that helps make it a special place to live.

Each House is run by a Houseparent(s) who may also have a small teaching commitment. They are supported by a Deputy Houseparent and a team of staff, some of whom live-in, as well as a dedicated Chef, kitchen and domestic staff.

Frequently asked questions

What if my child gets sick or needs medical care?

Yes! We have a medical team who work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during term time. Find out how they support our students' physical and mental health, and our medical facilities by visiting our Medical Health page.

Do the students walk back and forth to the Houses?

Yes! Our Houses are situated in a residential area between our main academic site and our Health and Fitness Centre. All Houses are between 3 and 12 minutes' walk from the main academic site in one direction, and between 1 and 10 minutes' walk from our Health and Fitness Centre in the other direction.

We appreciate this setup is very different to other schools where all facilities are contained within a single campus. However, we are proudly a town school, and believe that walking to and from House on a daily basis helps ground our students in the local community, as well as providing a clear delineation between home and school.

On starting, student are shown which was to walk, and which other building form part of the College estate, should they need to get help at any point. Initially they walk in pairs or small groups, gradually gaining independence as they move through the school. In winter months, when the evenings are darker, we run a coach from the main academic site around the Houses and back again to shuttle students safely back and forth.

Experience the daily walk and the shuttle ride with two of our students in the video below as they return to Glenlee (one of our further Houses):

What's the food like?

We like to think it's pretty good and as there are opportunities to try our food on an Open Day, we hope you'll agree!

Our Catering Team take great pride in everything they produce - from Weekend Brunch to a grand celebratory meal. Healthy eating is promoted and a variety of diets are catered for.

Find out more on our Nutrition page.

What is there to do at the weekends?

As well as plenty of opportunities for downtime and curling up with a book or a film, we also run a Weekend Programme of year round events which is open to both boarders and day girls. Examples of the types of activities on offer include roller discos, zorbing, ice skating, socials with other schools and trips outside of Cheltenham. This is on top of the sporting activities, and in-house crafting and games that take place here at College every weekend.

Find out more on our Weekend page.

What transport options are available for boarders?

At exeats and half terms, buses run east to Oxford, Beconsfield / M40 and London, or north up the M6 to Manchester. We also run a shuttle to the train station in Cheltenham to meet the main London trains. At the start and end of term, we also offer escorted airport transfers to Heathrow.

Boarders transport is bookable via an online portal. Through this parents can arrange transport to any UK location. Where possible, our external transport provider combines trips for CLC students to save parents money, and to provide company for travelling students.
