22nd March 2024

Lacrosse

Thirty-four players participated in the 2024 National Schools Lacrosse Championships in Aldershot.

Both teams played nine games over two days with great wins and competitive scorelines across the weekend!  The tournament weekend focused on preparation and recovery off the pitch, to support performance on the pitch. The players represented themselves and the school well while managing the weather, changing field conditions and the ups & downs of tournament play - coming back stronger and smarter every time.

Highlights include the execution of high-level strategy under pressure, the demonstration of incredible resilience in demanding physical encounters and maintaining composure when faced with high-stakes matches.  Ms Cornbrooks, Head of Lacrosse, would like to thank the extraordinary SFC2s who have given their time, passion and their leadership to the programme.  What a weekend, what a season, what a squad!

The final two days of the National Schools Lacrosse Championships saw our U16, U14 and U13 teams play in a one-day format of the competition. The U16 held their own playing in the U19 3rd team tournament. The players should be commended on their performance, scoring in every match they played and holding perennial top teams to low scores.

The fourth day of the tournament, the U13s and U14s faced muddy conditions but persevered through the day and delivered a good standard of lacrosse across their matches. A huge well done to the 52 players involved.

Golf

Congratulations to Regina (LC3) who represented Gloucestershire in her first County match. The match, played at Brickhampton Golf Course was against Worcestershire & Herefordshire and she scored one over par. Well done!

On Thursday 21st March, seven pupils represented CLC in the Gloucestershire Schools Golf Championship at Lilley Brook. Despite a very wet and muddy course, the sun shone on the players all day. Regina (LC3) led the team out and worked hard to adjust to her new clubs. The rest of the team followed and played well. Congratulations to Regina who finished 2nd in the competition and has qualified for the South West Championships in May. Both Aimee (SFC2) and Tilly (SFC1) qualified as reserves.

Football

CLC played Clifton College last week. The team were fantastic, working hard for each other, demonstrating excellent teamwork, enthusiasm and most importantly enjoying it!  It was wonderful to have the support of parents and Houseparents on the sidelines cheering on the team.

Hockey

What a weekend to finish the season! Two fabulous hockey performances at home capped off a great season of progress across the pitch. The 1sts played some fantastic hockey with pace, precision and connections enabling the whole squad to consistently create D entries and goal-scoring opportunities.  The 2nds worked hard and held their structure, finding pockets of space all over the pitch. They built connections and trusted each other. The U15 hockey team travelled away, and again, produced a solid performance.

Last weekend also saw Bella (SFC2) and Sophie (SFC1) playing national league hockey for the Cheltenham Hockey Ladies 1st team drawing 2-2 away to Fareham. Congratulations to both for playing at such a high level.

Squash

It was wonderful to see 18 CLC students taking part in the Cadbury’s Squash Tournament on Saturday afternoon. There were some brilliant games played with exciting scorelines. Well done to Sophia in UC5 who reached the final and to all the players for taking part in such a fun afternoon of squash!

Rowing

The rowers had an extremely successful day at Gloucester Head on Sunday. The event was a time trial-style race where the crews had to race 1750 metres down the Gloucester Canal.

The J18 crew of Delphine (SFC1) and Florrie (UC5) came first in the double with Alyssa and Issy (UC5) coming in third in this very competitive category. The J15 double of Mikayla and Ayesha (UC4) did really well in their first-ever race gaining brilliant experience. In the J18 category, Emma had a brilliant row, missing out on first place by only five seconds. Finally, an excellent result for Jenny who came 2nd in her first-ever rowing race.

All the students had an excellent day showing resilience, grit and determination. The rowing coaches are extremely proud and look forward to more racing after Easter.

Netball

This weekend marked the culmination of a fantastic netball season with our final fixtures. Our LC1 and LC2 netball teams showcased their best performances yet during the morning games at Hereford Cathedral School. Despite a close call for the LC2s, who narrowly missed a victory, the LC1s delivered two outstanding performances, highlighted by exceptional shooting displays.

In addition, a big well done to the UC4 students for their performance in the May Dent tournament, where they adapted their team formations well despite missing a few players. Later in the afternoon, our LC3 to SFC teams hosted Hereford Cathedral at home. Securing victories across all matches, they ended the season with an impressive clean sweep. Special recognition to the LC3 students who played a year up and emerged victorious - well done!

House Netball

Over the last week, students have been taking part in House Netball. Well done to all of the winners and all those who took part.

Staff v Leavers

The annual Staff vs Leavers event took place on Tuesday 19th March. This is a highlight for all SFC2s as they get to challenge staff in various sporting events. The matches are played in good spirit and the scores are often very close.

This year, the staff succeeded in beating the leavers in netball, badminton and hockey. The leavers were delighted with their convincing win in lacrosse, rowing and football finished with a 0-0 scoreline.

Thank you to all the staff and students who took part or came to support this wonderful event.

Senior Sports Awards 2024

On Saturday 16th March, College hosted the Annual Senior Sports Awards. The event is a celebration of all the achievements, hard work and dedication of students throughout the year. Not only recognising all the Saturday fixtures, but the mid-week matches, tournaments, sports tours and pre-season training.

This year, the guest speaker was Ashleigh Gloster, ex-England Lacrosse Captain. Originally from the States, Ashleigh moved to the UK in 2008, after graduating from Cornell University. She earned her PGCE in 2011 and began her career as a teacher. At the same time, her England Lacrosse playing career also took off. She has competed in multiple Home Internationals, European Championships and World Championships. The pinnacle of her career was in 2017 where, as captain, she led the England Lacrosse team to bronze medal World Cup glory. Ashleigh is currently back working with England and will be coaching on the sidelines at the Home Internationals tournament next month.

During the evening, several awards were presented to the pupils. These include Teacher Awards across the range of sports, Sports Personality of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Achievement and Team of the Year.

2nd Place:

Awarded jointly to Aurora (SFC2) and Sophia (SFC1).

Both of these students have been selected for Hong Kong's final trials and training camp ahead of the U20 Lacrosse World Championships, which takes place this summer. They have both put in effort above and beyond expectations during training this season. They have represented local Senior lacrosse clubs to gain increased exposure to higher standards of play, along with practising their position-specific skills in and around team training. An extraordinary effort from them both to reach this point and we wish them all the best in the next stages of the process.

Winner:

Gor-Bua (SFC1)

An incredibly dedicated athlete, competing in both the UK and abroad, it has been a busy year for Gor-Bua. She’s committed to her strength and conditioning work, her riding and her A Levels.  A fantastically talented dressage rider, she is now competing abroad up to Prix St George and Intermediate 1 Levels in the top tier of international competition.

Dressage is a sport that takes a considerable amount of training – with years of dedication required to build the partnership between horse and rider. Ahead of Christmas, she travelled home to compete, coming away with victory in both the Princess Cup 2023 and the Thai National Championships 2023. Incredible achievements!
